NASHVILLE, Tenn. – During a summer in which both the Belcourt Theatre and the Grand Ole Opry are celebrating their 90th anniversaries, the Nashville treasures are partnering to deliver a series at the Belcourt featuring a collection of films that feature Nashville locations, music legends, and in many cases its most famous show. The Belcourt’s stage served as the Opry’s first home outside of the WSM studios; the show was housed there from 1934 to 1936.

The fun begins on Sat., July 11 with a free outdoor screening at dusk of Coal Miner’s Daughter, for which Sissy Spacek won the Best Actress Academy Award for her portrayal of Opry legend Loretta Lynn. Scenes from the film were shot at the historic Ryman Auditorium as well as several other Nashville venues. Spacek and Lynn appeared together on the Opry stage at the Grand Ole Opry House on January 27, 1979 as Spacek prepared for her starring role. The screening will be in the Belcourt’s parking lot.

“Still thriving after nine decades, the Belcourt and the Opry are unique gems in the city’s history and story,” said Belcourt executive director Stephanie Silverman. “As Nashville’s nonprofit cinema, the Belcourt brings the world to our audiences through the power of film, while the Grand Ole Opry brings country music to the world from the Opry stage. We’re proud to call Nashville home for 90 years.”

After the free weekend screening of Coal Miner’s Daughter, the series moves to Monday evenings with “Music City Mondays” July 13 through August 17. Followers of the Belcourt and the Opry on social media can enter to win ticket packages including admission to “Music City Mondays” at the Belcourt and “Opry Wednesdays” at the Opry House throughout the summer. A full schedule of films to be screened as part of “Music City Mondays” can be found atbelcourt.org and the Opry’s show schedule can be seen at opry.com.
