With her sophomore album Pageant Material released on June 23rd, Kacey Musgraves is supporting the interesting niche she has made for herself - incorporating traditional country music with a refreshing twist, Kacey brings wit, humility and musicality to an industry that can be too serious and commonly follows a simple trajectory.
This is no exception with her new single, "Dime Store Cowgirl". Reading autobiographically, Musgraves recounts some of the lavish experiences she has had over the last few years:
I've had my picture made with Willie Nelson
Stayed in a hotel with a pool
Driven through New Mexico where the saguaro cactus grow
And I felt really small under Mount Rushmore
Inspired by a real life experience, and following in form of most material in Kacey's catalog, Musgraves states the truth - she has been fortunate to possess experiences she never imagined and some may never accomplish, but still is that simple girl from Golden, Texas.
I'm just a dime store cowgirl
That's all I'm ever gonna be
You can take me out of the country
But you can't take the country out of me, no
Cause I'm still the girl from Golden
Had to get away so I could grow
But it don't matter where I'm goin'
I'll still call my hometown home
Not one to shy away from the reality of life's experiences, let us send a cumulative "thank you" to a random stage mom in Texas - while competing in the Little Miss Tater Tot pageant as a child, said woman referred to Musgraves as a "dime store cowgirl." Many would consider this insultive and, in the overly competitive competition world, a stab to confidence. And perhaps it was at the time, but the beautiful and appealing thing about Kacey's music is that is relatable in human emotion and experiences, good and bad - there is no absolute perfection, a message prominent through Pageant Material and Musgraves' highly-acclaimed debut Same Trailer, Different Park. Facing these realities with fantastic lyricism is why music listeners of various genres are falling in love with her and the music industry is applauding her.
"Dime Store Cowgirl" is the best current release yet the least likely to receive airplay from radio stations. So do yourself a favor - take a listen below, we mean really listen, and tell us what you think. If you're new to Musgraves' music, make sure to pick up a copy of Pageant Material and Same Trailer, Different Park however you purchase your music.
Rating: Gotta take a listen.
